They seem to think that only those who argue that the world's welfare will come if the varṇa system is uprooted are the ones who desire the world's welfare! Their view may be that those who argue that the varṇa system is good are people who wish harm to the world. Both of these are illusions. More than in those who oppose the varṇa system, it is in those very people who say the varṇa system must be protected that the world's welfare is full and abundant. That they are unable to realise. They are under the delusion that if they somehow uproot the varṇa system, they will have become the saviours of the country. That is a naive satisfaction. Whether they oppose the varṇa system or desire to nurture it, they may enquire well, state the good and the bad clearly, and then see either to maintaining it or to ruining it; but in mere arguments that do not know the matter, perverse meanings flare up and a strange change comes about. Hatred grows. That is good for no one. Like chasing after a mirage under the delusion that it is water, with the delusion that all is equal they are causing unrest to everyone. It is very good for the rulers to join with the scholars who are the people's representatives and with experienced elders, and make investigations. But to grasp only the outward karmas as the main thing, without learning what these are about, and to start in alarm that there is some poison in this, is a mark of absence of Viveka. For rulers and scholars, the people's welfare is what matters most. In truth these varṇas came into being only for the welfare of all. Because the ways of applying them were not thought out and practised through experienced people, they have led to so many misconceptions. Consider a small example. Now foreigners have made bombs that kill hundreds of thousands of people. It is known that they are bad. Even though the government itself helps them in many ways, and even though the scientist who made them is clever, when it comes to using them the government's permission is needed again, is it not! Even if the government gives every help to harmful things, they must be used according to need; if they are used as one pleases, saying 'we have made them, haven't we', it is danger for all! When anarchy arises in the world, they use them for self-defence, for the defence of their respective countries; but the aim is not to destroy the world itself, is it?
