Some others propagate this same varṇa system in a different way. However that may be, these four varṇas have stood as four limbs, like the limbs in one body. These varṇas are limbs that arose in the very body called God. It is said that brāhmaṇas came from the face, kṣatriyas from the arms, vaiśyas from the thighs and śūdras from the feet. But this has a different, subtle meaning. The sense is this: he who is like speech, for imparting Jñāna as a guru does, is the 'brāhmaṇa'; he who bears the burden of the earth, being strong of arm, is the 'kṣatriya'; the capable one who holds up the edifice of society, as the thighs hold up the body, is the 'vaiśya'; and he who sets in order the other tasks, as the feet serve for moving about and for work and toil, is the 'śūdra'. Just as, whichever limb of the body is wanting, it is a lack for that body, so for society, if any of those doing these tasks is wanting, a defect arises and its welfare is spoiled. Just as all the limbs of the body are excellent, all the varṇas are indeed noble. Discord in society is just like the legs and hands getting angry with the stomach and stopping work. They are all pieces that came from one sugar doll, are they not! Pinch off the head and put it in the mouth, it is sweet; pinch off the leg and put it in the mouth, it is sweet. These limbs called varṇas all came from the body of the one Paramātma; how can they be different? The karmas are different, but the blood vessels, and joy and sorrow, are one and the same for all. The same blood flows through the whole body; one blood does not flow for the hands, another for the feet and yet another for the face, does it? This is a common dharma enjoined by the Veda, not rules made up by men. So, to think, without understanding the varṇa system, that through the varṇas many feelings of division arise in the world and it falls prey to hatreds, is nothing but ignorance.
