If man is to achieve this, there are two paths: one is ‘outer sādhana’, the other ‘inner sādhana’. Niṣkāma karma is outer sādhana; inner sādhana is dhyāna and samādhi. This state is also called “Ātma-saṃyama”. In the terminology of Vedānta this same state is called “nididhyāsa”. To attain it, śravaṇa, manana and the rest are the basis. Only through them must dhyāna be achieved. But without śravaṇa, manana and the rest, siddhi in dhyāna does not come.
