In plain words
For volunteers there is no need to fix an age limit. They may do service according to their strength, whenever they get the chance. For the Seva Dal, however, rules and regulations are essential. At present the age for men is 18-35 years, and the age for women 18-40 years: so it has been laid down. This is quite right. You cannot hope to find keenness for discipline, enthusiasm and the like in the old. If the members are all of an age, they will find still more enthusiasm in the work of service. When those of their own age rebuke them, the members feel it as a greater humiliation and they correct themselves, too. If a person of 60 rebukes a youth of 18, there is a chance that the youth will not take it as binding on him and will ignore it. ‘What do you know about the change in the times?’ He may brush the old man aside, saying, ‘You are all of the old days.’ So, once people reach the age of 40, it is good that they themselves do service as volunteers, as far as their own strength goes.
Rāma was one who had taken human form; Sugrīva was one who had taken the form of a monkey; yet the closeness of their situation, the closeness of their age and the closeness of their sorrow brought about a deep friendship between the two. Both had to live in the forest because of a brother: both had lost their kingdoms! Both were parted from their wives!
