Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Like a raging gale, time is rushing past; the span of life is melting away like a block of ice. Even so, man has not come to recognise the truth of life and its meaning. ‘Asatomāsadgamaya tamasomājyotirgamaya. Mṛtyormā amṛtaṃgamaya.’ So he asks for it only with his lips; but if you look at how far he has won the fruit of that prayer, and how much contentment it has brought, everyone meets with nothing but disappointment.

Worshipping the Avatāras specially on their birthdays bears no fruit. That worship fulfils its purpose only when you treasure the jewelled words of those holy ones in your hearts, take them up in practice and rejoice in them. Material pomp and fanfare are simply wasted, simply meaningless. From now on, celebrate the birthday each in your own home, keep the ideals safe in your hearts and live by them. That alone is enough. Plant the spiritual seed in your heart and taste the fruit of Ānanda; that alone is enough. Elders of the Organisations, without falling prey to disappointment, without giving unrest any room, make Ānanda grow by teaching and spreading the teaching in the form of practice, and pass on the experiences.
