In plain words
Or again, we go to a medical shop and do not look at the shop's name. If we ask, ‘Are there dosas?’, how short of brains we would be. In the same way, when we come to attend the class, if we say, ‘Touch the vibhūti, sign this,’ are all these lessons that belong to the class? They are lessons that run against it. So, at the time you are leaving for home, ask with such wishes, and Swami will surely satisfy you. Swami, who has looked after your welfare in so many ways, will He send you away at your leaving without satisfying you? Never will He send you away so.
We must carry out the karmas that are our duty: which karmas to do at which times, in which seasons, towards which persons. To carry out our duty, we must be wholly absorbed in whatever task is to be done at whatever moment, as the time requires. Today we are doing social service. In social service, as you have been told, let us serve wholeheartedly, in a sacred feeling, and with the faith that the very spirit of service gives your life its worth, take part today in every task. Truly, it is rare even to find those who teach such good feelings and such noble paths. Whoever points out the faults that are in you, such a one alone you must trust as your guru. But those who cover up your faults are the very ones who do you harm. So all you should do is be very glad, thinking, ‘We have found Swami, who tells us the faults in us; through this He is giving us the chance to set our faults right and enter on the right way’; you must give no room to discouragement or to any kind of weariness. After coming here and developing these practices over a sacred month, when you go back to your homes your parents too will be overjoyed at your conduct. Giving such joy to them, giving such satisfaction to us, living a fortunate and happy life in your own life: how sacred a life that is, you yourselves can reflect.
Students! When you go back, at home they will be watching, first of all.
