In plain words
It lit up beautifully into a flame. “Swami! Give me the light of Jñāna. You are all-powerful, are you not! Grant me Jñāna,” said the disciple. “Alas, you foolish fellow! That very thing is what I have been teaching you all this while,” said the guru. “I do not understand in what way you taught it, Swami! Teach it to this fool clearly, in a way he can understand,” he begged. “Because you had kept in it the water called the vāsanās for sense objects, the light, which is Jñāna, would not burn there; so you threw away that water of the vāsanās for sense objects and poured in the oil called nāmasmaraṇa. But because the old vāsanās had settled in this jīva, it made no move to catch again. By being set in the sun called Vairāgya, and by drawing up this oil again, the flame has been burning brightly. So pour out completely all the old vāsanās for sense objects that are in your heart. Live through all the old saṅkalpas in this jīva with Vairāgya. Then come to me; there will be no obstacle at all to lighting for you what is called the flame of Jñāna,” he said.
Put in the wick that is the jīva, wring out the water of the vāsanās for sense objects, put in the oil that is the essence of Bhakti, light the flame of the Ātma, and to the abode of fearless Śānti make your way.
I hope too that, recognising this well today and putting away all our old vāsanās, every one, so as to light this flame called Jñāna, you who have lived in an atmosphere like this will light this flame of Jñāna back in your own places, give this Jñāna to the people of other parts and to the brothers around you, and lead still purer lives. Everything you have experienced in the days of this month, all of it: the very moment you get back there, you must try not merely to use it in words but to use it in work. If you carry the quotations told here back there, utter them only as words, and set about reciting them as great Vedānta, it will become a great laughing-stock.
