In plain words

On this birthday you must think about the gift you are to give Swami. Only when you love your fellow men, take a share in their sufferings and do them the service they need will it be as though you have given Swami a fitting gift. That is the one gift Swami asks for. You must offer the Paramātma, as your present, Prema that is pure, steady and selfless.

The whole world is a field of karma

A small example. This whole world is like a camp. In it the welfare of the world goes forward. It is a field of karma. In it, sacred works that bring the world its welfare take place. To carry out our tasks in this auspicious celebration, we fetch the vessel called the body from God, its owner. In the everyday world, people of the middle class fetch vessels from the wealthy for their weddings. When they clean the vessel they fetched once their work is done and give it back to its owner, he is pleased. If instead we do not clean the vessel we fetched, but pierce it with holes and hand it back to the owner in ruins, not only is the owner angry, he will not trust us with that vessel a second time. All these vessels called bodies we receive from God for the sake of our work. When the tasks we are to do in this world, the sights we are to see and the joys we are to enjoy are complete, and we offer this vessel to God pure, steady and selfless, we become worthy of God's grace. Giving no room to any craving, not letting desires grow, cutting them down as far as we can, and holding that service of the people is itself the service of Janārdana, the members of our Organisation must enter social service on a wide scale.

There is nothing for you to achieve beyond becoming worthy of God's Prema

On this birthday there is just one thing I wish for. Even this is not merely for Me. I wish for it only for the sake of your Ānanda. You are drawing up programmes for the coming 60th birthday celebration. By the time the festival of this 60th birthday is celebrated, you must adopt at least 6000 hamlets and shape them, along the right path, into model villages. The rich and those in authority have servants in plenty. For the poor, the forsaken and those in torment, no one is to be seen who will help. You must go to such people and serve them, so that they look on you as their own friends and kin.

Pour spirituality into the ears of people writhing with hunger, and it will not get into their ears. First, satisfy their hunger. For them, food itself is the Paramātma. So give them the Paramātma in the form of food. To those in distress, give the Paramātma in the form of Śānti. To those suffering in sickness, give the Paramātma that is medicine. In this way, only when you bring the Paramātma to people in the form of the cure for whatever suffering each one undergoes can spirituality reach their hearts to some extent. Act otherwise, and in place of spirituality atheism itself will spring up.
