Passage 11

In plain words

We bought a sari for thirty rupees. We bought a pant for the husband for twenty rupees. She bought a gown for her child. That came to ten rupees. She bought a pair of shorts for her son. To work out this sari, this pant, this shirt, these shorts, they press this, there. Think how much our natural intelligence is spoilt when we depend on machines like these. In the old days, when we had our children taught sums, they would work very hard and learn them by heart, and all these would be printed in the head. We must study this learning with our natural intelligence. We must not depend too much on these machines. If there is current in them, things go right. If it is gone, things go wrong.

So the very first computer is the head. Today we must see to it that children keep this on the right path. There is no use in our bringing machines at a high price. We must recognise the way to use them. So only when we use them properly will this money and that machine give their result in the right way. Above all, among these human values, we must keep this waste of money somewhat in mind. We must add waste of food to it too. We must join waste of time to it as well. We must also tell today's teachers much more about this kind of training. You must not take it amiss, the way things stand with today's teachers. I had to say this with such Prema and kindness, with the intention that they should follow the right path. When some teachers want to do some piece of work, they must first make a master plan for it. Suppose we have built a hall for a Lab. We must first make a plan: which room, where, in what position we must fit it into this hall. They build a wall. After two years, “It is not needed,” and they knock it down. Building and knocking down, building, knocking down: is this the work they do? Does a professor who does not know from the start that it must be like this become a professor? Experience is needed.

Not only this. A few more matters. Suppose now there are subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology. For these we must get the chemicals fit for the year. We must make a proper estimate, “On a reckoning, our experiments will cost this much,” and give the equipment list for it in the proper way.
