In plain words
At such a time it is not possible for Me to go either in front or behind. That is why you must bring divinity along, joined to you. You must take God along with you. This itself is the mark of a true sādhaka.
One may think, ‘Wherever we are, we will do Swami's service.’ But he has no such breadth of heart in him, has he? This is merely the foolishness of a selfish man. In such a state he covers up many kinds of faults and with this wastes his life. One who has faith so complete has no desires of any kind. But until such a state is reached, we have no choice but to follow. Kṛṣṇa and Rāma too learned many branches of knowledge under their gurus, and in pleasing them they succeeded by their own effort. That is why they went on teaching the principle of the guru to their disciples. One must experience it oneself, rejoice in it, and share it with others. Because these wicked desires grow, because we build up our worldly life, because we believe the world alone is real, wicked intellects of this kind keep taking the crooked path.
Learn ever so many arts: what is the gain? Who has the power to escape what is written on one's forehead? If evil thoughts come into one's head, the intellect dries up and turns to stone.
How can divinity be understood by intellects like these? We draw such fools close to us and follow along with them. Your fault is just this: not trying to give them right counsel and set them on the right path. That is why those faults become faults for you too.
So we must enter society, face as far as we can the faults taking place, the injustices taking place, the wrongdoings and the misdeeds, and make a fitting effort to set it right. Only one who has such fitness is entitled to social service. So we must earn such an entitlement. Whatever dangers come, we need not be afraid. Whatever blame comes to us, we need not shrink. Blame and reproach belong only to the world. Not to you. You are eternal, you are true. Such a one need not be afraid of blame and reproach. When we make faith in God firm, put that faith into practice and experience Ānanda, even the strength of a thousand elephants comes to you.
