In plain words
At a time like this conference, everyone attends. Afterwards their faces are not even seen. So, with conduct like this, to call ourselves office-bearers is shameful. Even if all the organisations stop, I shall be glad; but conduct like this I do not like at all.
Little by little, all this comes and reaches Sai. So it remains My responsibility. Telling you this is My duty. All the services we do are only for our own blessedness. So we must bring it in with such self confidence, with confidence in ourselves. "Sai did not do this for me, did not do that": this they say of Sai alone, but what have you done for Sai? Say what you have done; let us see. You are doing nothing. Whatever is done is selfishness and self-interest. Apart from that, what work have you done for Sai? Without doing for Sai, how can you get the fruit from Sai? Only when we go to a shop and pay the price due for it can we receive the thing we are to receive. If you want the thing without paying that price, how selfish is that! Do service that expects nothing, selfless service. Sai will grant you everything. If you do not do what you must do, and stand ready to receive from Sai, how will it come to you? What you earn is not real. The real wealth is the grace of God alone. To gain the grace of God you must sacrifice in every way. There is nothing greater than service. So however many dhyānas you do, however many japas you do, however much tapas you practise, however much of the Veda you chant, if the heart within is not pure, all these are useless. All of you know this. Suppose we have made idli and sāmbār to eat. For this sāmbār we brought good fresh vegetables from Bangalore. We put in good dal. We put in tamarind and all the proper ingredients. But then we ate that sāmbār and idli. The stomach turned. Everything was new. Everything was of the best, yet the stomach turned; what is the reason for this? The pot it was cooked in had no tin lining. We are doing dhyāna well. We are doing japa. We are doing bhajan, with rāga and tāla. All these we have made like the vegetables, the salt and the tamarind juice. If in the pot called the heart there is no tin lining called Prema, all this turns to poison. First of all we must set the thing called Prema within the heart. Whatever is done without Prema turns out useless.
