In plain words
Even this has come about in God's creation for some cause and purpose,’ telling them so, well, in little stories that give them zeal and encouragement, we must make a fitting effort to develop faith in God in them. In the histories of the Bhāratīyas, among the sādhus and saints, they have lived many kinds of ideal lives. One who loved God, prayed to Him in many ways and did many sādhanas to attain Him was Sūrdās. Once Kṛṣṇa appeared and asked, ‘Sūrdās, do you want to see Me? You have no eyes; shall I give you eyes?’ ‘Kṛṣṇa, are You still plunging me in Māyā? The sight that sees with these eyes of skin, is that sight? It is not. Grant me the inner eye of Jñāna,’ he begged. Are there not crores upon crores who have eyes? Do they see You? In this world are there not crores upon crores who have ears? Do they all hear the song of Your flute? In this way Sūrdās went on asking Kṛṣṇa.
Having eyes, they became blind, and the auspicious form of Yours they could not behold; having ears, they became winnowing fans, and the most enchanting song of Yours they could not hear.
‘When You are everything, what is there for me to ask? I do not need these eyes. Give me the eye that ever experiences Your Satya, Your eternal principle, Your heart, Your Prema, Your Ānanda,’ he said. So we must go on teaching the children who have no eyes in this way. ‘My dear, there are so many. Crores of people there are who have eyes. What is happening through them? No, no; develop your inner sight. Try to behold Divinity,’ so we must keep giving those children zeal and encouragement. So teachers must without fail, using their wits a little, try to recognise this matter and act on it: at what levels, to which person, in which conditions and in what way to teach.
Truly, in today's conditions, Education in Human Values, these human values, are very much needed. Man's form is seen, but humanness is not seen in it at all. The Education in human values begun today is equal to life itself for the world. Just as a man parched with thirst in a desert feels such joy when he comes upon a cool drink, in the same way, at this time when there is neither peace nor security in the world today, when humanness has been rooted out and men behave simply as demons, these human values must be given most urgently.
