Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must light this unbroken lamp of Jñāna and give boundless Ānanda to society. We must wipe out unbelief and bring about the right state of things. People who do not recognise the principle of society and the principle of the sādhu are today making Sanātana Dharma a laughing-stock in many ways. We must demonstrate our truthful conduct to them. We must establish divine practices of sādhana among these people. We must spread a compassion and Prema that can melt even stones. We must root out narrow ideas. We must develop the broad principle of the Ātma. This is true tapas. This is true sādhana. It is not our duty to pass the time merely doing selfish practices such as japa, dhyāna and yoga. These are only good acts that sanctify time! Above all, renunciation is very necessary. That is why the Veda taught, “Not through action, not through offspring, not through wealth: through renunciation alone did some attain immortality.” We must take up this renunciation, this yoga. Yoga lies within renunciation itself. This yoga of the Ātma is the true enjoyment.

We must spread the unity in multiplicity

In the world there are the wealthy, the strong, the learned and the virtuous. But ‘the rich in the Ātma’ are rare. Only one who has recognised the principle of the Ātma and known the Ānanda of the Ātma is truly rich in the Ātma! We must spread the unity in multiplicity. We must not be bound in the least by distinctions of race, religion, caste or colour. We must hold the essence of all religions to be our own faith. That is the true religion. That is the vow of these sādhus. This is the true tapas. So, giving no room to any politics and no room to any distinction of race, religion or colour, the sādhus, who have given up every attachment, must go on spreading equality, divinity and purity. No one can deny this. It is not possible to deny it. I hope that you will foster such broad feelings well in this meeting and, from today, go round society street by street, wipe out the unrest among the people and establish peace and order.
