Passage 12

In plain words

That is why I am telling you too. We must not waste money either. For us to misuse this sacred money is a great sin. That is why misuse of money is evil. Without misusing it, take it when you have need. You will surely enjoy happiness. The Institute will get a good name. Then, the library needs some books. The U.G.C is giving, isn't it, five lakhs, ten lakhs. Whether it is the UGC or anyone else, whoever gives it, we must use it as useful, not use it as useless. But in other universities, because it has come from the UGC, buying every book they see as they please and making the library big. We are not looking at what in these is of use. But we must take all that is necessary. There is nothing wrong in that. Take all the books needed for that subject.

There are some more matters you must note well. A P.hd teacher and a P.hd student are doing P.hds on whatever subject they please. They take up some subject or other in the world and write on it. That Guide does not know that subject. Poor man, he accepts whatever they have written and signs it. In this way Phd students turn out hundreds upon hundreds of books every year. And in this it is like this: what one wrote, another says is wrong and writes another Phd. If you look at all these, not one of them there is of any use. We need not take these hundreds of books. Let us take Important books. Let us take the books that gather all of them together. We can do our work with those. Taking every book: what is in that one is in this one. Both are just the same. We must not waste by taking such books. There are plenty of books in the library; what is the use? It is like this: there is a saying. When he sees the poor, pity; his pockets, empty. We have a craving for books, but look into the books and there is nothing. So if there are a few thousand useful books, that is enough for us. If there are lakhs of useless books, what is the use? Seeing the library: “Oh! What a big library. How big it is!” they say. This is their satisfaction. It is not to satisfy them that we must strive. Our satisfaction. Self satisfaction is needed. They do not even note whether anyone reads all these books or not. So, all our professors, however much money it costs, bring in the books you need. Make a list of them beforehand. Which do we have with us? Which do we not have? Look into these two and bring in what you need. So one or two people cannot do this.
