In plain words
Food will increase by eighty parts in a hundred.
But however good the changes in nature may be, if man's mind is not transformed, all of them become useless. So man's transformation is most necessary today. Only when we change this mind on the sacred path, in the Ātma-principle, in a broad way, will this world always be full of plenty. Many say, “We are doing tapas.” What is tapas? Is it putting your head down and your legs up and repeating some name? Tapas is nothing but changing our hard heart so that it melts and flows. When we see people in suffering, the poor and the helpless, our mind must melt. Our heart must flow. That is the fruit of tapas. If you keep the heart a hard stone, however many sādhanas you do, they are all simply useless. They only waste time. Many people speak of dhyāna, dhyāna. What is dhyāna? What does dhyāna mean? Our life itself is a dhyāna. From the time we get up at dawn until we lie down, we are in dhyāna. As soon as we get up we go to the bathroom and clean our face: we are in this dhyāna. The moment those are done we go into the dhyāna of coffee and tiffin. The moment that is done we put on our dress and are in the dhyāna of the office. On the road, before we reach this office, we keep going into a dhyāna on accidents: which bus will come, which car will come, what accident will happen. Without this dhyāna of the road we could not reach the office. When we go to college we are in the dhyāna of study. When we go to the Play ground we are in the dhyāna of the game. When we go to the market we are in the dhyāna of things. Are not all these dhyāna? Without what is called dhyāna we cannot do even the smallest job. That is, turning the mind on each matter is dhyāna. When we turn this same mind towards God, they call it dhyāna on God.
So we need no special time or special method for dhyāna. Many people have made up many names and forms for this dhyāna and in the end hidden true dhyāna. A small example. I am speaking now. Without dhyāna on this, “What is Svāmī saying?”, you would not understand what I said. This too is dhyāna. So what is called dhyāna has no one form. To do dhyāna with this restless mind is not possible for anyone. Now, in the name of dhyāna, dhyāna, there are only stunts of every kind going on. Instead of taking hold of this restless mind, this monkey mind, needlessly for an hour or two and falling into unrest in many ways, do the work of your house, do the work of your office, do the work of society. Is that not dhyāna? How much time they waste! Even sitting for an hour does not check the mind for a single second. You are wasting an hour in the name of this dhyāna, are you not?
