Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Put that time into the duties of the home. While you do all your work, think of God. Look on all these only as forms of God. How easy this is! Leaving this easy path, they bear many labours, do great drills and fall into all kinds of troubles. Do your duty sincerely. Carry out your duty well. Against carrying it out: wasting time, wasting money. We must not waste even half a moment of precious time. So what is called dhyāna does not belong to one matter alone. We must spread dhyāna evenly over all matters.

Some others think they must live in solitude. What is solitude? Is it sitting alone? That is not its right meaning. Many think, “I must live in solitude, I must go off to some forest and sit”, and go and sit in some Ṛṣīkeśa, some Haridvāra, some tapovana. Only people who cannot understand the principle of solitude get into this kind of useless pursuit. Solitude means stilling the mind. If, even sitting in the forest, your mind wanders all over the world, how is that solitude? Without checking the saṅkalpas, wherever one goes and sits with the body, it is not solitude. Samādhi too is the same. Restraining saṅkalpas is itself samādhi. We must do away with saṅkalpas. Or, while saṅkalpas remain, we must see our saṅkalpas as God's saṅkalpas. At the time of those saṅkalpas we must enquire when these saṅkalpas come and how they come. All these saṅkalpas come in after the saṅkalpa “I, I, I” has come.

Some people in this world rejoice, thinking they are enjoying every comfort, in dhyāna, in yoga or in worldly life. They are the very ones who cannot recognise what true Ānanda is. They are the very ones who cannot know what these comforts are, what they mean. Enquire well and consider: are you enjoying the comforts, or are the comforts enjoying you? No, no. These comforts themselves are enjoying you. Enjoying all of man's comforts, it pulls out all the strength in this body and leaves behind in this body the diseases called attachment, hatred, envy and pomp. The comforts enjoyed with the body are not truly comforts. The comforts enjoy the body and wear the body out in every way. If you were really enjoying comforts, why should the body wear out? Why should the body grow weak? Why should the body sink into old age? The comforts have enjoyed this body; so they suck it dry, squeeze it to pulp and leave it sunk in nothing but old age. So you take a comfort that is not yours as your own and delight in it. You forget your own nature.
