In plain words
What commits the fault is one thing; what suffers the punishment is another. The mind is the cause of all sorrows. Try to punish the mind. But to try to punish the body: this becomes adharma. If one person does a wrong deed and the judge gives punishment to another, is this justice? Yet what you punish is the body. This makes you fall into still more sin,' I told him. 'Forgive me, forgive me, Swami,' he said. This is just how the human world is. The Jñāna that examines what is eternal and what is not is turning to nothing in them. Cleverness keeps growing, but character keeps shrinking. So cleverness is not what matters most for us. Sacred character is our support. Our place is according to our character itself. To be in the place of God, we must develop the qualities of God.
Set about achieving this with effort. Little by little it becomes possible to keep sacred feelings safe in your heart. Having filled a vessel with all sorts of things, if you want to fill good things into it, it cannot be done. First empty that vessel. Then try to fill it with the sacred feelings you mean to fill it with.
If the head holds evil thoughts, if the ears listen to slander, if the eyes lie in wait to spy, if the ears listen in at the doors, if the citta holds a crooked nature, if the mind deceives, the moment He sees these deformities, God will not stay there, brother.
So only when you drive these deformities away does God come to dwell there. To install God in the heart, we must drive all these out. This itself is the true, the chief worship. Through this very worship, experience the Divinity that is to be held within, and rejoice. Increase your Ānanda and share it with others.
