Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

No, no. You were born. You must recognise the chief cause of your birth, and your duty. For what purpose have you come into this world? Why are you grieving?

When they were born they wept; when they died they wept; in between they weep over things, for this reason and that; did they weep to lift up Dharma when its decline came about? did they ever weep for Him whose form is Satya? What did they weep for? They wept for the sake of weeping.

No, no. What we must weep for is God alone. Rāmakṛṣṇa too said the same. The people of the Brahmo Samāj came and questioned Rāmakṛṣṇa: "Rāmakṛṣṇa! Have you seen God?" "Oh yes! I have seen Him. I am seeing Him. I am talking with Him. I am living in Him alone. I go about with Him alone. I am dwelling in Him alone," said Rāmakṛṣṇa. In what way do you go about with Him? Where is He? We cannot see Him. "You mad fellow! You weep for money. You weep for fame. You weep for studies. You weep for family life. You weep for others. Do you weep for God? Weep for God, and He will surely appear to you." Man weeps over every petty little thing. He does not weep in the least for God, who is as dear to life as life itself. He does not grieve in the least for the sake of God. When that is not there, what is the use of weeping over any number of things? It is just like weeping for the sake of weeping. We must become servants of God's grace and of the grace of Dharma. We must achieve Dharma. We must speak Satya. Defending the country is not what matters most. When we protect Satya and Dharma, Satya and Dharma themselves will protect the country. So we must bring the learning we have learnt into the path of Satya and Dharma.

Students! Today you have received prizes. What is the meaning of bahumati? Bahumati means many minds. With just one mind you fall prey to so many worries. If you have many minds, what will become of you? From bahumati you must become ekamati. Only when you become that ekamati will you receive the bahumati that is God's grace. You must strive to achieve that one mind. That one mind is gained only through Prema. You must recognise the feeling of one Ātma: "The Prema that is in me is in these; the Prema that is in these is in those; the Prema that is in all is one." Every person must recognise this principle of Prema and understand it. This principle of Prema is gained only by prayer to God. Even this prayer does not count if it is done merely for show, with Ahaṅkāra. It must well up from the heart, in the inner Self. When shall we gain that principle? We must make our heart pure.

Where there are evil thoughts in the head, ears that listen to slander, eyes that peer in hiding, a mind that listens at the doorways, a heart of deceitful ways, a tongue that deceives: seeing these deformities, justice can no longer live, brother; no good quality can stay in the heart, brother.

What is the reason for justice disappearing today? The mind of evil thoughts, ears that hear slander, a gaze that peers in hiding. All are evil thoughts, bad ideas and wicked thoughts. The root cause of everything is Ahaṅkāra alone. We must take care that the demon called Ahaṅkāra does not enter us. What have you seen, that you should have Ahaṅkāra? In so huge a universe you are nothing at all. Look. Inside so huge and vast a world, how big is India? Inside this India, how big is the Anantapur district? Inside this Anantapur district, how small is this village of Puttaparthi? In this village of Puttaparthi, what are you! Being so small, is it not a shame for you to look at so vast a universe and be proud? Where is the reason for your Ahaṅkāra? Or again, when the feeling of one Ātma comes, "I alone am all", whom will you look at and feel proud? There is no second thing. So even then there is no room for pride. Ahaṅkāra is only a demonic quality. Some people strut about with their positions and their money and live in Ahaṅkāra. Ahaṅkāra is a great disease that is born to bring a man down. We must honour others.
