Passage 11

In plain words

Embodiments of the divine Ātma! What you must learn on today's birthday celebration, what you must try to practise, what you must begin from today, are three things only. Give up criticising others. Slandering others is a great sin. If slandering others is itself a great sin, slandering the Paramātma is a still greater sin. So we must not dwell at all on the badness of anything or on the faults of others. We must welcome everyone with Prema. We must enter into karmas. That is, while we are in this, wide as it is, we must go into the villages and do sacred service. I have said it before:

Village service is indeed Rāma's service; Rāma-rājya is all Prema; give service, receive Prema.

We must enter into these services having taken a firm vow. We must believe that service to society is service to the Lord of all. One thing more you must keep well in view today. In no undertaking held in the name of our organisations must we have any connection at all with the government. The government will do the work the government has to do. These are works we must do for our own attainment, so we must achieve them by our own effort; we do not need the help of others. As much strength as we have, that much is enough. We need not do it on a grand scale.

A ladleful of milk from a good cow is enough; why a potful of donkey's milk?

So: one, that our organisations, whatever organisations they are, keep clear of any connection with the government; second, that we enter society and do service; third, that we stay free of slandering others: these alone are the true sādhanas.

Whether in children or in elders, in anyone at all, if any others at all slander from close by, give that fellow two. That will come to him as right sense. "Madman! The blow I struck is not meant for you. I struck at your quality," tell him. If everyone listens, these people who say such things go on saying still more. If we keep listening to their slanders, they go on speaking and keep increasing their slanders still more. As "Śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putrāḥ" says, man, you were born a son of immortality. You are not an animal. You are not a demon. Nor a dānava. You are a human being. Being born a human being, to scorn a fellow human being, to slander a human being: this is a great sin.
