In plain words

The ṛṣis were not afraid when they saw the fierce beasts. The beasts were not afraid when they saw the ṛṣis. What was the reason? Precisely because there was perfect Prema in the ṛṣis, the influence of Prema moved among the fierce beasts, and the fierce beasts too took on the form of Prema. So as the company is, so is the influence that arises. When we keep company with good people, our qualities too turn out good. For everything, Prema alone is the chief thing. Prema alone is the form of the Paramātma. In this Prema itself we must live.

In Italy there lived a great violinist, Anthony. This Anthony's violin had a great name. He used to take a year to make a violin. A friend of his came: ‘Anthony! You are a family man. If you make one violin a year, what income comes from it? How can you look after your family? How can you live through the days in peace?’ Then Anthony spoke. ‘O friend, the Paramātma is the perfect form. Since He is the perfect, complete form, even a small task a man does must be perfect and complete. Only then is the perfect Paramātma satisfied. I am not making this violin for the welfare of my family; I am not making this violin for the joy of my own life. I am making this violin for the satisfaction of the Paramātma, who is perfect,’ he said. Whatever work any man does, he must do it for God's satisfaction. With just this in view the Veda said, ‘Every karma for the pleasure of God.’ However many sādhanas we do without Śānti, it all becomes useless. However many yogas we practise without patience, we only put the body to strain; we cannot gain the Śānti of the Ātma at all. Without contentment, without Śānti, however much japa we do, it turns into an artificial japa; it does not turn into love of God. Whatever we do, we must do for the pleasure of God. However small the thing you do, it is enough. God always looks at the quality; He does not look at the quantity.

A ladleful of milk from a good cow is enough; what use is a potful of donkey's milk?

We are doing very great sādhana. We did one hour of sādhana, dhyāna. You sat for an hour, but how long did the Manas stay still? The Manas did not stay still for a single moment. In this way you are wasting hours.

Regard every act you do as God's work. This is the right, easy and gentle path.
