In plain words
When you make self sacrifice, then self realisation comes. So, first of all, self confidence is essential for every person. With this confidence we must discriminate. So dedication, devotion, discipline and discrimination are all closely bound up with one another. They must all move together, each in step with the other. They must be inseparably bound. Then a kind of firmness arises in the way a man thinks. Then that is called determination.
Determination means tenacity. This tenacity is not fit for everything. We must not do just anything at all with tenacity. Having discriminated and known that a thing is good, hold to it firmly. If, having discriminated that this is wrong, you insist on doing that wrong, you will be ruined. So, once your heart knows that a thing is good, hold to it firmly and set about achieving it! In this way, these five are essential to every act. All of them together make humanness fulfil its purpose. These five are essential for changing humanness into divinity. Whatever work we do, it must be such that it satisfies not only us but the others too. Some examples. There are doctors. These doctors see many patients. What for? This is not sevā; it is their profession. What is sevā? Freeing those who suffer from their sufferings. But whether or not we are giving that relief: that is what must be discriminated. A small example. You have examined a patient thoroughly. You have looked at the B.P., you have looked at the E.C.G., you have looked at everything. You are satisfied. After seeing it all: ‘Sir! Your heart has enlarged,’ if you say, he is filled with sorrow. Will you then be one who has done sevā? Or one who has caused pain? Those who are doctors must not speak that way to the patient. Teach him the means of curing it. ‘Sir! It is like this because your blood pressure has gone up. You must try to bring your blood pressure down. Cut down your worries’: if you advise him so and give him the right medicines for it, he is satisfied to some extent. But if you tell him his heart has enlarged, however many medicines you give him, the sickness of his mind will not go.
