Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

There is no difference of ‘this consciousness’ and ‘that consciousness’. Everything is made of consciousness! The reason is that the substance of Brahman itself has been taking shape as this outer world.

Evolution is the step-by-step unfolding of nature

Today the whole world is discussing the theory of evolution in many ways. Everyone believes in the theory of evolution. But we should try to recognise, to some extent, this principle of nature's evolution. As for what evolution means: evolution is the step-by-step unfolding of nature. Here is a small example of this. From matter, life was born. From life, mind was born. But what is matter? Matter is the veil that life has wrapped around itself. What is paddy? Rice covered by a husk is what we call paddy. As long as this husk remains, we say ‘paddy’. Take the husk off, and it becomes rice. So life exists wrapped in the husk called matter. All in all, it is from this matter that life has come to be born. And it is from this life that mind has come to be born. The evolution of every human being proceeds from matter up to life, and again from life up to mind. But from there too, evolution must go on and finally be completed. Until this evolution is completed, humanness is not complete. From this mind we must come to the transcendent mind. From the transcendent mind we must go on to the Saccidānanda mind. Whoever has not gone that far is not a complete human being. For any fruit that is born as a tiny fruit and grows into a green fruit to come to ripeness, sweetness must come into it. When it has become a perfect fruit, it parts from the tree. That is Vairāgya. That Saccidānanda state must come forth in us. The day a human being experiences that Saccidānanda state is the sacred Śivarātri. All other nights are only nights of darkness! So we must bring the unripe humanness within us to a state of ripeness. To come to such a ripe state, we must go from the mental level we are at today to a transcendent mental level.
