Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Today's schooling has the effect of developing the head alone. People are constantly developing only the power of the intellect. Intelligence is God's gift to us. Is man using this intelligence rightly? Are we enjoying it in the proper way? No, we are misusing it. Today intelligence is growing well among students. Are they putting it to good use? No. Only when we turn this knowledge into skill does balance come. Man has great need of balance. In life, from daybreak until night, man lives only by keeping his balance. In the same way, the mind too must have balance. That is just what they called equanimity. Only for lack of this equanimity does he fall prey to misconceptions of many kinds. And that is precisely what leads to depression and confusion. The mind by its nature is fickle.

Learning is for Vijñāna, labour is for food

The mind is made of saṅkalpa and vikalpa. ‘The proper study of mankind is man,’ they said. Only when we make these three, Thoughts, Words and Action, one does purity of citta come about. Today our thoughts are one thing. Our speech is another. And we do deeds contrary to both. That is why balance is lost here. If we turn our intelligence into skill, there is balance; but we kill it. What does study mean? What is the purpose of education? Education is for life and not for living. What is the aim of education? education is qualification of mind not collection of thoughts. So this is how our education system ought to be: today we must set the mind within humanness on the right path. Is education merely acquaintance with books, merely the earning of degrees, and is earning jobs by these means education? No, no. Education means understanding humanness.
