In plain words
Good and bad are in our mind. When something is not to your liking, you call it ‘bad’. When it is to your liking, you call anything at all ‘good’. ‘For men, the mind alone is the cause of bondage and liberation,’ they said. So the mind alone is the root cause of everything. What is the mind? Some say it is made up of ideas. Bundle of desires is mind. We must reduce our desires. When we go on a journey for a day, we take a small bag. Life is a long journey. That is why: less luggage, more comfort, make travel a pleasure. We must reduce the luggage of desires; the more it shrinks, the more at ease we are. Today, whoever you ask, he says, ‘I want peace, I want peace.’ We must weigh the meaning in this phrase with discrimination. I, want, peace: these are three words. The first is 'I', that is, oneself. The second, 'want', means desires. The third, 'peace', means Śānti. If you want Śānti, you must remove the desires that stand in the middle. Then you will have Śānti. These very desires drive our Śānti away. Śānti, Śānti! Śānti is not in the world outside. It is within you alone. Only when we turn the Ānanda within into inner vision do we experience Ānanda.
God alone is our true friend
Embodiments of the divine Ātma! Above all, we must develop confidence. We must trust in God. But we have lost faith in God. Without God there is no world at all. Whether we recognise it or not, divinity is present in all. You are not one person, but you are three. The one you think you are; This is only 'Physical'. The one others think you are, means 'Mentally'. The one you really are, 'Atma'. That alone is the true principle. Inquire into that. Investigate it. You think you are the body; you are not the body. You think you are the mind. Where is your mind in sleep? Where are your senses?
