Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The senses are mere instruments. You think, ‘The eye sees.’ No; a radiance has entered into it.

A small example. You have all gathered here. Your eyes and ears are here. But your mind is thinking, ‘There is work at home,’ or ‘I must go to the office.’ Then you cannot hear what I have said here. You cannot see. The senses are here, the mind is there. The senses are inert. The body is like a torchlight, the eyes like bulbs. The Buddhi is merely like the switch. The mind is like the batteries. However new a torchlight is, without batteries it is useless. So we must set the mind on the right path. However much wealth we earn, however much we study, however much fame we win, no one at all can give us peace of mind. It is not something found in the bazaar. It is not something friends give as a gift. Friends, after all, come out of self-interest. They stay as long as you have money; otherwise they go. They do not even say goodbye. The true friend is God alone. He is always right there with you.

Only when we root out Ahaṅkāra does Bhakti grow

In every matter I keep speaking of the 5Ds. In any field at all, if we follow these always, we will be at peace. Dedication means we must root out Ahaṅkāra. Only then does Devotion grow. Only after Discrimination comes Discipline. Only when we are seasoned in this does Determination come. Devotion does not mean merely doing japa and pūjās. It means concentrating on every task you do. Work is Worship Duty is GOD. We must do our duty well. We are not doing our own work properly. That is why unrest keeps growing in us. That itself is our witness. So we need self-confidence. When self confidence comes, there is self satisfaction.
