Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We become people who have misused sound of this kind. We become people who have wasted our mother’s Prema. So we must take care not to misuse all these powers, which are forms of Lakṣmī.

Learning. Are we putting this learning to good use?

Though one has learned by rote the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas, though one is able to compose prose and verse, if purity of mind is missing, the man is ruined.

What use is it to read so many books? What use is it to chant so many Vedānta texts? Do we practise even one of them? Learning that cannot be practised turns into nothing but ignorance. What we have come to know we must put into practice. It is with this in view that we started Ceiling on Desires in our Sai Organisations. Do not waste food. Food is God. Only through that food do we have our head, and only through the head are we able to understand the Tattva of God. If there is no food for a day, the head does not work. If we keep on like that for two or three days without eating, our memory fades away. So it is food that keeps our head going. Who brings this head on to the right path? It is He, God. So: do not waste food. Next, the second: Don’t waste money. Money is the form of Lakṣmī. ‘Misuse of money is evil,’ they said. Money that has been misused is money gone to waste. And then, it is time that is the very form of God. Kālāya namaḥ, kālakālāya namaḥ, kāladarpadamanāya namaḥ, kālātītāya namaḥ, kālasvarūpāya namaḥ, kālanirmitāya namaḥ: all is time. That is why: Don’t waste time, time waste is life waste. Our life goes to waste. Then the divine power of Durgā: energy. Bad looks, bad words, bad hearing, bad thoughts, bad deeds: keeping from these. It is into this that we pour out all our power. All these are forms of the Divine. So when we waste the Divine, our very life goes to waste.

So today we must find the way to put these to good use and not waste them. We must practise the good. What we practise we must experience. What we experience we must make grow. What we have made grow we must share with all around us. This is man’s foremost duty. When through sādhana we bring each such power under our control, to some degree, that itself is yogaḥ cittavṛtti nirodhakaḥ. It is only by putting all their powers to good use on such a right path that all the great ṛṣis of Bhārata were able to see divinity.
