Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

One may have learned by rote the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas, One may have mastered verse and prose, Yet if he has no purity of heart, that man is ruined: What more than this can I make known?

… holding only the authority of the Vedas, the Śāstras, the Itihāsas and the Purāṇas as their foremost aim, have lived their life as a life offered to God: such is this land.

Though one has strength of intellect and strength of arm, Without the strength of God he grows wretched: What became of one as great as Karṇa in the end?

Karṇa had every strength. But he went beyond God's command. Strength of arm, strength of intellect, strength of wealth, strength of people: even with every strength, if man lacks the strength of God, he is nothing but wretched.

The strength of learning is surely most necessary. But the learning of today cannot be learning.

Today's learning grows only cleverness; It will not grow character, not even a little.

Character is what is needed. If you merely take all the books into your head and do not put that head into practice, what is your character, what is your conduct? It must be fit for practice. Ācārya means one who is joined to practice. Our Vice-President, Sharma, said: All learning without practice is useless. So all of you must become, in the future, leaders of Bhārata and rulers of many kinds. The whole future of Bhārata rests on … of today's young people. So you are the uplifters of the Bhārata to come. The very students of today are, in the future, leaders, pleaders. When such students are not made, the country falls into troubles of many kinds; so the leaders of today, all of them, on some day … as students themselves. You must not forget this. It is the students of today who may be the leaders of the future. Keeping as your aim the prosperity of the country, the good character of the country, the excellence of the country, the purity of the country, you must carry this path of yours forward. Today science and technology are growing in many ways. As high as this science is rising, so low is sense sinking. So our progress must progress with sense. That is why: Manayeva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ. This very Manas is the root cause of our Mokṣa, and of a kind of bondage. If you set the mind on the right path, stand as its true master and lead your life in right practice, there is no one higher than you.
