In plain words
We must develop faith in God. God has neither anger nor grace. He plays according to your feeling. If you place a piece of iron there, the iron has no power of its own to turn either this way or that. But if you put a magnet in between and turn it this way, the iron too turns this way. If you turn it that way, it turns that way. The iron can move only through the power of this magnet. Without the magnet the iron has no living power at all. That is precisely why we must recognise two kinds of nature within humanness. Man not only receives the good; within Divinity he has himself punished by himself. I told you. The axe struck the sandalwood tree. But the sandalwood tree gave its fragrance to the axe. The sandalwood tree did not hate the axe at all, and did not abuse it at all. For the badness it has done, it itself suffers. What is the bad experience that comes to this axe? The axe goes through the ordeal of fire. The axe takes blows from the hammer. You see! However much fragrance it received, when the axe grows blunt again it goes through the ordeal of fire. They put the axe into the fire. Not only putting it into the fire. They beat it with a hammer. Is this punishment given by God? No. No. Though God gives good in return for the badness it did, its own badness gives it bad. So God need not give bad. God need not give punishment. He is punished by his own self. Gold is of fine value. The goldsmith puts it in the fire and melts it. Though he puts the precious gold into the fire and torments it, that gold goes on rejoicing. The reason is that it rejoices, thinking, “I am becoming purer still, I am turning into pure gold.” Its price rises. But, O worker in gold! Goldsmith! You must recognise the sufferings you go through. However much you punish me, I become more precious still, and purer still. But only your eyes burn from that smoke. The sparks that come from that fire soil your clothes. Besides soiling your clothes, they spoil your sight too. “This is trouble for you alone, not for me,” says the gold. So we must not think of good and bad at all where God is concerned. God is the witness. If you switch on, the Fan turns. A cool breeze blows. White light comes. If you switch off, it gives heat. You have to suffer in the dark. The light loses nothing because you do not put it on.
