In plain words
We want happiness and Śānti. Where do this happiness and Śānti come to us from? All happiness and Śānti come about only through our control of the mind. How does this control of the mind come to us? Through the presence of God alone, through that treasure, we can achieve control. That is precisely why, in the Bhagavad Gītā, when one longed to win victory and to experience Śānti, He gave a fine answer to it. You crazy fellow! What you long for is Śānti and happiness, what you want is victory: how will these two come to you?
Yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanurdharaḥ tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama.
Where Kṛṣṇa, who is God, is, where Pārtha is: that is, not Arjuna. Man, the son of the earth: where man is beside God, where God is beside man, there alone victory comes to you. You will win a firm victory. So when you want victory, Ānanda and happiness, install God within your heart. When you ask yourself where God is. As to where He is, He is in the very prayer you offer every day. From that very prayer the answer comes to you. When the children eat each day, some of them, not all, say
Brahman is the offering, Brahman the oblation, offered by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman; Brahman alone is reached by him who is absorbed in Brahman in his action.
You think, “I am offering it to God.” But what answer does God give? ‘Ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṃ deham āśritaḥ’: within the beings that bear this body I dwell in the form of Vaiśvānara and digest all that you eat, My dear! So if you put the question where God is, the answer comes from within: ‘Ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā.’ But you pay no heed to this answer. Indeed, if the digestive organ in this body did not work properly, what would become of the food we eat?
Who placed the digestive organs in the body? By whom do birth and death come about? These foolish men could not recognise Him.
Is it in your power to create? You can cause death. But is it in your power to bring the dead back to life? Every single thing is nothing but God's will. Men are unable to believe in that will. A man without faith cannot lead a life of Śānti at all.
