Passage 4

In plain words

So the vessel is essential for us to see the sun's reflection. The water inside the vessel is needed too. This water is the mind. This vessel is our body. The very sun reflected in it is our Ātma. So the Ātma in all is one; the differences in it are only differences of vessel. They are only differences of upādhi. When we set out to enquire in this way, every single fault arises from body and mind alone. In some vessels there may be dirty water. In some vessels there may be water that moves restlessly. In some vessels there may be pure water. You can decide that the sun seen in pure water is sāttvika, the sun seen in moving water is rājasika, and the sun seen in dirty water is tamoguṇa. So what must we purify today? We must make the effort needed to purify the mind, so that it is free of the restlessness and the impurity called rajoguṇa and tamoguṇa. How must we purify it? How must we attain stillness? What is the sādhana we must do for this stillness and this purity?

Today man tries to cover up his own faults. He tries to search out the faults of others. As long as these two qualities remain, his heart will never be pure. Such a man will never attain stillness. Only the heart of one who tries to recognise the faults in himself and the good in others becomes pure, holy and still. But today we carry out all our efforts as things physical, worldly and showy. This very show is bringing about man's downfall. However many kinds of effort we make, we cannot understand the principle of the Ātma. A student said that although Swami's principle is hard to understand, when we follow it we can reach that attainment. But what is the right way to attain it? That student said there is some error within the bond between Swami and you. Where is this fault? Many may think and imagine it in many ways. Whatever situation you are in, you must grasp it, bear it, and strive for the means to achieve it. If instead you go on letting faults grow within you, this is not possible at all, whatever place you are in, whatever company you are in, whatever divine temples you are in.
