Passage 9

In plain words

This Rādhā offered body, mind and wealth. Whose is this body? Whose is this mind, whose is this life? These three are all given by You.

Bhakti arose to refine this. A 12th class boy said, transformation. Change must come. When change is to come, it takes many kinds of chastening. When a rock is to be made into a fine form, the sculptor has to strike it in many ways. With chisel and hammer he has to shape it well. Only then does the formless rock become a beautiful image. This is what people call saṃskāra. To make a chair of something lying there as a mere log, in how many ways you have to work it! Only when you strike it with the chisel, shape it in many ways, peg it, tighten it and polish it, work it in all these ways, does it become a usable chair. To make a lump of gold into a jewel, you put it in the fire, beat it with a hammer and refine it in every way; only then does it become a beautiful jewel. That is what saṃskāra means. Only when you make such a transformation does the material take shape as something valuable and useful. All materials are being refined, but man is not being refined. You can shape even a log into a useful form. You can make even a rock into a fine form. You can husk paddy, make it into rice, cook it and eat it. You can bring vegetables from the market, add salt, chilli and tamarind, make sāmbār and rasam and eat them with relish. But man is not ready for saṃskāra. Then how will he become the finest of men? No hardship must come to him. No suffering must touch him. Every comfort must be there. He must go and reach the highest place. How shall we get there? This is only the notion of small minds. That is why all the sādhakas of those days made sacrifices and went forward, pushing through whatever hardships, losses, sorrows and blame came. Only when we bear and endure such things do we take shape as sādhakas.

So, in the world today, the saṃskāra of man is most urgent; unless there is change in man, the world will not change at all. The world is not what our eyes see. The world means what is made up of people. So only when there are people does this become a world. Without people there is no world at all.
