In plain words
“For so many years I have been expounding the Bhagavad Gītā. All who have heard my Bhagavad Gītā have praised me no end: ‘Ah, never have we found so great a commentator!’ And in the end that Mahārāja sent word through his minister that I do not yet know the Bhagavad Gītā. What an insult to me!” he said. “The government of our Bhārata gave me the title Padmaśrī. It gave me the title Vedāntaratna. It gave me Bhagavad Gītā Samrāṭ. When I have been given so many titles, is this Mahārāja to insult me? If it had been an ordinary man, I would have seized him by the hair and beaten him.” Thus in many ways he went on showing his wife his stature and his might.
Then his wife spoke gently. “It is true, dear; what the Mahārāja said is quite Satya,” she said. “Are you talking with any sense or without sense? How can what the Mahārāja said be Satya? Do I know nothing of the Bhagavad Gītā?” he went on, speaking angrily to her too. “Sir! Be as angry as you like. Scold me as you like. Like the Mahārāja, I shall tell you only Satya,” she said. I have been watching your recitation of the Bhagavad Gītā for fifteen years. I have been listening to all your discourses with great delight to the ear. Have you looked at what the Paramātma said in the Bhagavad Gītā? Have you reflected on it? Ye janāḥ paryupāsate teṣāṃ nityābhiyuktānāṃ yogakṣemaṃ vahāmyaham. In the Bhagavad Gītā He said, “Whoever longs for Me, in whatever way, I Myself will look after their welfare”; and not only that, He said He Himself would grant Mokṣa.
Giving up all dharmas, take refuge in Me alone; I shall free you from all sins; do not grieve.
So He said. “If you truly have faith in God who said this, why should you go to the Mahārāja? Can God not look after that welfare? You went to the Mahārāja because you wanted money. What do you know of the Bhagavad Gītā? You teach the Bhagavad Gītā, but you have no faith in God's words. You do not know the Bhagavad Gītā fully,” she concluded. At that he was deeply pained. This is true.
People go on describing how God said this and God said that; but today, in all the spreading and teaching of the Bhagavad Gītā, who practises God's word? It is precisely because such teachings of Vedānta have multiplied that spirituality is sinking day by day. The feelings that come from the heart and the words that come from the mouth must be practised in deeds.
