Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

When these three have become one, the true principle takes shape. Students! We need not take much trouble to grow grass. To raise a crop, we must labour hard. In the same way, it is no greatness for us to enjoy useless, worldly sensual desires. That is like grass. We must labour for that alone: to grow the crop that is the divine, splendid, ever-new principle of Prema for God. Nobody is seen taking any labour of any kind for it. They appear to us like devotees. If clay sticks to the potter-insect that crawls in the clay, it is no potter-insect. It is a blacksmith-insect. Those who have truly recognised this divine principle have no such ups and downs over sensual desires. We try to enjoy this merely to pass the time; we do not recognise the Satya that this is the right royal road to the abode of eternal Satya.

For worldly life this has its place. But we must think of the supreme goal of eternal life. Life must not be mere living; we must see life as an eternal way of life. However little all of you know, put one or two things into practice, take that as the path of Satya for our daily life, and remember it every day for at least one or two minutes: this is most essential. How many hours a day we waste for selfishness and self-interest! We do not give even five minutes a day to the principle of God. What karma is this! Why should such evil thoughts arise! Evil thoughts of this kind will not lead man upward.

Who is the blind man on this earth? The one who, though learned, does evil deeds.

So they said. ‘What is it that must never touch you?’ they asked. What must never come to touch you is the misery of debt. Such miseries we suffer every day. We must never become dependent on another in any way. We must gain the strength to stand on our own feet. That we must achieve through Prema for God alone. Without Prema for God, Prakṛti will never come under our control.

I told you the other day. Rāvaṇa desired only Sītā, born of the earth, and forgot Rāma. If you want only Prakṛti and forget the Paramātma, whose property is this Prakṛti? Is it yours? No. It is the Paramātma's property. If you win the Paramātma's grace, Prakṛti will come under your control. This inner meaning, this secret, no human being recognises. “With my strength, my power, my learning I have achieved this,” men keep boasting.
