In plain words
Prema is what matters most. Without Prema there is no life at all. There is Prema in every human being. But he lets that Prema flow out along many paths. The Prema between husband and wife they call moha. The Prema between mother and child they call vātsalya. The Prema among friends and kin they call anurāga. Prema for things they call icchā. Prema for the Paramātma alone they call Bhakti. Prema is one, is it not! So this one Prema goes along many paths. When we set water down there, the Hindi people come and call it pānī. The English people come and call it water. The people of Tamil Nadu come and call it tanni. The Telugu people come and call it nīru. But the thing has not changed, has it? What is there is one; because of these many kinds of language we call it by many names. So Prema is one. That Prema itself is God. We need not search for this God separately. The principle of the Ātma in our body has sprung from Prema. If that one thing, Prema, is in us, the body turns into a temple of God. As long as we utter the Name of the Lord, so long. Deho devālaya prokta. This body is a temple. Why do we call it a temple? Is it not only when there is some God there that we call it a temple? In the same way, inside our body there is the God called the Ātma. It is from this Ātma that Prema springs. That is pure Prema. That is sacred Prema. In Vedānta this is nirguṇaṃ nirañjanaṃ sanātanaṃ niketanaṃ nitya śuddha buddha mukta nirmala svarūpiṇaṃ. So many descriptions they gave. Every human being must develop this sacred principle of Prema within himself.
When there is Prema, the whole country becomes one. That is why, in humanness, only in one who can control himself does the power to control others spring up within him. That is why in Sanskrit this was called dama. Control of the senses is essential. When we achieve this dama, we can achieve anything. So such a one alone they called dānta. He who has controlled the senses is a dānta. We need not become Vedāntins; it is enough to become dāntas. We must grow such sacred feelings through Prema alone. We must act through Prema alone. We must bring our life to its end through Prema alone. This is true Bhakti. When we say Bhakti, Bhakti, it is not merely doing pūjās, doing japa, doing dhyāna, doing yogas, doing sacrificial rites. These may be called good deeds. Truly, if we have no Prema, tell Me, what is the use of doing all these?
