Passage 5

In plain words

All these are useless. When a heavy rain is pouring, if you set the pots upside down, not a single drop gets into them. But when you turn the mouth towards the rain, at least some water gets in. In the same way, when we let Prema into our heart, we can rejoice without end. We can make our birth worthwhile. Making one's birth worthwhile is no special labour. It is growing the principle of Prema.

With Prema we can achieve anything. People say Jñāna, Jñāna; what is Jñāna? There are five kinds of knowledge. One is acquaintance with books. We read books. We put everything that is in the books into our head. Head and book both become one and the same. What is the use? What we read in that book we can say in words. Where is the use in merely saying it? Words do not change the mind in the least. So we must put it into practice. If you pour even a little amṛta into your mouth, purity comes; but if instead whole pitchers full of amṛta are kept somewhere, what will that quench for us? The thirst is not quenched. If our thirst is to be quenched, if our longings are to be fulfilled, we must grow Prema for God, golden ones. We must not achieve anything at all through hatred. This hatred takes us far from God. Hatred, envy, show and Ahaṅkāra: all these are forces opposed to the principle of the Ātma. They must not be in us. All these are the marks of animality. Truly, man must have such things as Prema, compassion, forbearance and sympathy. Satyaṃ nāsti paro dharmaḥ. There is nothing beyond Dharma. What is Dharma? Merely doing as you please is not Dharma. Trikaraṇa śuddhi: that is Dharma. Say in words what you think in your mind. Carry out in action what you have said in words. It is the oneness of these three that is true Dharma. To think one thing in the mind, to say another in words and to do another in action is not Dharma. Manasyekaṃ, vacasyekaṃ, karmaṇyekaṃ mahātmanaṃ. The nature of the great souls is the oneness of these three. No one can understand the nature of the great souls. Golden ones, if we understand even a little of the nature of God, our birth becomes worthwhile beyond measure. We need not do many things. We need not see many things. When we love everyone in the spirit of service, there is no other way better than that. The true royal road to reach the presence of God is one alone. Love all Serve all. Love everyone. Serve everyone. Through that alone we have happiness. Through service we can attain fulfilment beyond measure. That is why service is so very important. We must take part in service to society. God is in every human being. Whomever you serve, it is the same as serving God. Sarvajīva namaskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati.
