Passage 5

In plain words

When man lives his life with this feeling, he lives his full span and experiences fullness as well. But man today develops narrow feelings and, through the divisions of mine and yours, brings his life to an end in its middle years. Yet you may think of everything as yours, but you must not grow attached to anything. My cow has calved. Saying, ‘My calf has been hurt’, he looks after it out of the attachment of ‘my cow, my calf’. But he knows this is not his. Though it is not his, he thinks of it as his and looks after it. In just the same way, though all the things in this world are not yours, think of them as yours and make the effort that is needed to look after them. You need not look after them. If you do not stand in the way of their keeping, that alone is enough. That is the great essence in the 18 Purāṇas. Two sentences. Help ever Hurt never. Paropakāra puṇyāya pāpāya parapīḍanam. If you do not help, it does not matter; if you do no harm, that is worth ten thousand. Feelings such as these grow only through the feeling for God; through feelings of the world there is no room at all for feelings of helping others, broad feelings, gentle feelings, sacred feelings to grow in man. So every man must develop divine feelings and fresh feelings within himself. To develop such divine feelings and so give them to the world, from ancient times the great ṛṣis have carried on this sacred spreading and teaching, through the actions that are such sacrificial rites, the yajñas and yāgas.

Embodiments of Prema! The principle of God is not something understood so easily. When we go deep and inquire into a true matter in daily life, each of us, by himself, can decide with our own Ātma as witness, ‘this is wrong’, ‘this is good’. Out of some passion or some command we may say to someone words that should not be said. Afterwards, once he has calmed down and cooled off, his own heart pains him. ‘What words I said! This fault is mine’: so he repents within himself. But he does not show that repentance outside. He only presses it down for the time being. If his repentance were truly lasting, he would not set about such words another time. Doing wrong, repenting; repenting, doing wrong: + - + - =0. That is all our life is. In the world today, it is doing wrong every day, thinking of those wrongs as wrongs, and on the second day doing wrong again.
