Passage 11

In plain words

If you are dirty, if you are not in a fit state, you feel so much shame just at your friends seeing you. When you think like that, when you live with a dirty mind, why should you not be afraid that God sees that mind? If you are to sit anywhere in a line, you spread waste paper or something under you and sit. Why? Not even a speck of dust must get on you. You want so much purity just to sit somewhere; if God is to sit in your heart, should it not be clean there? If God is to sit in your heart, first of all it must be cleaned. Then He comes and sits there. The whole kingdom is the Mahārāja of Mysore's own. Will he sit in drainage water, saying, "The whole kingdom is mine"? The throne he sits on is something apart. So all hearts are God's. He does not sit in a dirty heart, saying, "All hearts are Mine." Where it is pure, there He sits. Where all is pure and healthy, there He sits. He does not sit as in musical chairs. He sits in the hearts of all, too. How? We have filled a thousand vessels with water and set them out. But above there is one moon. He is seen in all the vessels. Are there so many moons? One moon. In the same way, all these bodies are like pots. The water called the mind is there. The principle called the Ātma is in all of them. But in dirty water it is not seen properly. It is like this wavering. See, in that it looks as if it were moving. In what is pure and steady it is steady. Dirty water is tamo-guṇa. The wavering mind is rajo-guṇa. Clean water is sāttvika-guṇa. There our reflection is seen well.

You see! If Swami is to appear to you specially and holy, you must be clean. See that there are no jumps and bumps. Waves will come. You must give waves no room at all. All the waves together become the ocean. Saṃsāra, an ocean, poison. If you stay in one Name, it stays steady. Do your duty as an offering to God. Do your duty. I do not say, "Do not go to the office." I do not say, "Do not eat food." I do not say, "Do not wear a dress." Eat well. Go to the office. Earn well. But do not forget God. Do your duty sincerely. That is what Swami asks. Work with honesty. Whatever anyone says, do not be afraid. She came weeping over how many strange circumstances of every kind had come. I told her, "Don't worry. All this is mental fear. Swami is there; fight boldly." I said. She said, "I do not want the job at all; I will resign." No, no. We must fight it out. Fight to the end, finish the game. With faith in that word alone she went and took up her post.
