Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So the sūtra in everyone is one. When we recognise that sūtra as the very sūtra, humanness is understood well. This itself they called the Brahma-sūtra.

The Bhāgavata, the Bhārata, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Upaniṣads, the Brahma-sūtras: here, the essence of the Bhārata is the Gītā. The essence of the Gītā is the Brahma-sūtra. The very essence of these Vedas is the Upaniṣads. The very essence of these Upaniṣads is the Gītā. That is why I am the embodiment of the essence of all the Upaniṣads. All the Upaniṣads are cows. From this cow we must draw the milk. To draw the milk, it must have a calf. Only when it sees the calf does the cow give its milk. So beside the cows called the Upaniṣads, He showed man, pure of heart, like the young one. Arjuna is the representative of all mankind. Showing the calf called Arjuna, the cowboy called Kṛṣṇa drew the milk. That milk is the essence of the Upaniṣads. For whom is that milk? The cow does not drink its own milk. Then the calf drinks its fill and frisks about. It has no further need. Then the one who milks is ever content. So for whom is this milk? For the wise, they said. "Those who are of good qualities, to them I shall give this," He said.

If we want to grow in good qualities, we must follow our Dharma. The body is bound up with Dharma. The body has come for the sake of Dharma. What is called the body's Dharma we must carry into the Dharma of practice, and through that shape ourselves into the Dharma of the Ātma. The body is indeed the first means of Dharma. From the feet to the head, we must practise Dharma. The feet too must go on the right path. The eye too must go the right way. That is the true path, they said. That is what I tell the children now and then. See no evil. See what is good. Hear no evil. Hear what is good. Talk no evil. Talk what is good. Think no evil. Think what is good. Do no evil do what is good. That is the way to God. Always bad look, bad talk, bad hear, bad job: that is animal. What the Bhagavad Gītā has said about humanness is one thing, just one. Many people keep saying many things: "The Bhagavad Gītā spoke about yoga, the Bhagavad Gītā spoke about Bhakti, the Bhagavad Gītā spoke about Jñāna." But it did not speak about any of these. The First śloka, ‘Dharmakṣetre ... with it, the 1st word is Dharma. In the Last śloka, Yatra yogeśvara ... mama: in the Last śloka the last word is mama. The first is Dharma. The last is mama. Mama-Dharma. Man's Dharma is mama-Dharma. Mama Dharma. My Dharma. First head last feet. middle, the navel. That is it. For the establishment of Dharma I come into being age after age; ‘I have come to establish Dharma. That Dharma too is in the middle, like the navel. Giving up all dharmas ... You take refuge in Me. Leave all dharmas to Me. I shall look after everything. Apart from that, you must not divide, saying, "This one is mine, that one is Yours." God does not accept this partnership business.
