In plain words

Again he said, Śrī Rāma, Śrī Rāma. So there are devotees of Rāma in Laṅkā too! Hanumān thought, and he was filled with joy. He sat there a while longer. Vibhīṣaṇa got up. Meanwhile Hanumān went inside. This Hanumān too came in saying, Śrī Rāma, Śrī Rāma. Hearing this Name, Vibhīṣaṇa felt great joy. He said Rāma, and this one said Rāmā. Plus plus: these two Names joined and became a Name still more full of bliss. There, the two of them talked. Who are you? Who are you? they asked each other. Vibhīṣaṇa said, I am Rāvaṇa's brother. Hanumān said, I am Rāma's servant. When he said he was Rāma's servant, Vibhīṣaṇa felt joy. Meanwhile Hanumān asked a question. You repeat the Name of Rāma, but have you thought well about the word Rāma? he asked. Vibhīṣaṇa: For so many years I have been repeating the Name of Rāma. Never do I join in any action without the Name of Rāma. This is my discipline, he said. Yet Rāma's grace has not come to me. Not even the darśan of Rāma has been granted to me. Then Hanumān said: You dwell on the Name of Rāma. You repeat the Name of Rāma. Are you doing any of Rāma's work? When you remember the Name of Rāma, you must do Rāma's work as well. The Name of Rāma is positive. Rāma's work is negative. Only when these two join, only when positive and negative join, does the result come. If you do not enter into Rāma's work and stay in the Name alone, there will be no attainment at all, he said. Merely with your mouth you remember, saying Rāma, Rāma. In my body every single hair is remembering the Name of Rāma. It is not by remembering the Name alone. I stay immersed in Rāma's work. That is exactly why I have become worthy of Rāma's grace.

What work of Rāma's am I to do? Vibhīṣaṇa asked. When your brother Rāvaṇa brought away the wife of Rāma, the God you worship, and kept her in Laṅkā, did you do anything at all to set her free? You remember only the Name of Rāma, saying Rāma, Rāma. Have you given a single thought to the suffering of Rāma's wife! Have you taken any care at all in her matter? Or have you set about bringing your brother to his senses? What use is your Bhakti for Rāma? There is no gain in merely saying the Name of Rāma. You must carry out the action that fits that Name. That is exactly why you have not had the darśan of Rāma. Look, this is the difference between you and me. You have had the darśan of the Mother.
