Passage 3

In plain words

The stillness of Manas itself is man’s chief goal. From … the earth came. From the earth the moon arose. So the sun, the earth and … are parts of one and the same substance. Among these three there is no difference at all. In man’s … these three take the forms of Manas, Buddhi and Vijñāna.

The eighth is the authority of the Veda. That itself is the true Satya. ‘Satyānnāsti paro dharmaḥ.’ This God, the embodiment of Satya, eternal and formless, … coming forth in the world with a form. When we hold God to be of this eightfold form and try to see Him, no troubles at all come to us.

The Ātma has three kinds of limbs. The first is Manas. The second is Buddhi, the third saṃskāra. The single form of these three is the Ātma. The Ātma does not mean something that has taken on a particular shape … . The Ātma is the form in which Manas, Buddhi and saṃskāra are blended. When we ask anyone, ‘What is the mind?’, they say, ‘It does not matter.’ ‘There is no need to enquire into it,’ they say; if one asks, ‘What is matter?’, he says, ‘There is no need to think about it at all.’ … what is it that one enquires into in the world? What else can a person enquire into who does not understand what mind is and what matter is?

In human life it is Manas itself that is always dwelling on matter. This is the very centre of Manas; it is because we cannot recognise this fundamental, all-important principle of Manas that we fall into so many sorrows. Manas is not merely a gathering of resolves. It is a form whose nature is to resolve and to waver. Its very nature is to reflect without ceasing. We must try to recognise this all-important, … principle of Manas. This Manas is not physical. It is not … . The Ātma’s power of enquiry, which travels far faster than the wind and than light: that is Manas. Holding within us this power of Manas that moves so fast, we think of ourselves as mere weaklings. That is a real misfortune. The heart and Manas have no connection. The heart is a chief physical thing in the body. It keeps supplying blood to all the limbs. The heart is physical. But Manas is not physical. It is the chief power of the Ātma.

The second is Buddhi. This is brain power itself, so we think. That is not right. It is the Ātma’s power of enquiry; Buddhi is very different.
