In plain words
That the nation should be uplifted, that you should become ideal men, that men … of this kind should be given to so great a nation: these high feelings alone keep growing in our hearts. When I am wishing for … welfare, it is … misfortune that you have not the least faith in this. How will you, who cannot recognise even such small things, uplift the nation? When you cannot uplift … … yourselves, how do you get the right to uplift another? Remove these … … feelings, these unruly feelings. Make the heart thoroughly pure; in that … … develop the remembrance of God's Name; there is … no other good end beyond it.
He who ruled the earth ever in the full might of truth, Hariścandra himself: did he not leave the earth and go? The glorious Nala, who ruled all the worlds in splendour: did he go taking the earth along with him? Māndhātā, who adorned the Kṛta Yuga: did he depart with his riches tied in a bundle? Śrī Rāma of old, who bridged the ocean: is he on the earth now? How many, many kings have gone! Not one takes the earth along with him. Will you alone carry your learning, wealth and family tied upon your head, O righteous heart!
You do not think about it … even a little. Only in narrow feelings do you sit… … casting arguments. This is only a sheep's tail. However much you pull it, will it grow bigger?
Bring a rat's tail and scrub it as much as you like: black stays black, it does not turn white.
So through this contemplation of the Name and through faith in God, develop your life and develop a high ideal in yourselves. Swami, will you speak? Speak, speak: what is there to speak? For how many days I have been speaking! What is the use of speaking? Only when what has been said has value is it possible to speak … of a new matter.
