In plain words
What is true freedom? Not to stand in the way of the freedom of others: that is true freedom. So such freedom is not seen in the world, in such a man. If someone is making a row, the policeman comes, catches him and beats him. He says, "I have the authority for this; this is my freedom." But it is not authority for him. His authority is to decide what is right and wrong. Even that is not his authority. He acts in keeping with the rules of the government. In this way, since each one stands above another and that above another, no one has freedom. Freedom belongs only to the one who is at the highest level of all. But for him there is no second, so there too there is no such thing as freedom. So when we inquire in these two ways, no one in the world has freedom. Then in daily life we follow the two, individual freedom and fundamental law. They are the actions we carry out for our livelihood. These must be there; no one can throw them away. We must travel keeping to the road traffic rules. Sanjay Sahani spoke. A lady walking on the middle of the road said, "This is freedom." But that is not freedom. It amounts to going against the Government's decision. When one goes against it, either the Government gives a punishment, or some lorry or other strikes and the punishment comes. But we have to experience the result of it. Here we have to experience the results called doership and enjoyership. So, whichever way you think about it, man has freedom nowhere at all. That he does not know the very meaning of the word freedom. A man who had freedom would not come into the world at all. He would have no birth at all.
From the moment he took this body and came into this world, there is no freedom. Jayamma spoke. If you tie a beast to a peg in the middle, then, if it is a ten-foot rope, it can go only ten feet away, though it may go round the peg. It may go close to the peg; it may go into the middle; but it cannot go far. So where is its freedom? First there is the peg; second there is the tether on its neck. This is not freedom. So our freedom, as we call it, is held only within some limits.
