In plain words
Paradharma means the Dharma of the body. Svadharma means the Dharma of the Ātma. Svadharma does not mean anything to do with these Dharmas of caste, the Dharma of the kṣatriya, the Dharma of the vaiśya, the Dharma of the śūdra. Sva-dharma. The Dharma of the Ātma. The Dharma of the Ātma never brings fear. Only when we follow the Dharma of the body does fear arise in us. So when we rightly recognise the ślokas of the Gītā, or the meanings of its words, and act on them, we shall not be subject to any troubles or any hardships; so we must hold our divinity as divinity. Then there will be no room at all for any sorrows, hardships or reproaches to reach us.
Students! You may not know it. Divinity has not one single change. Believe it or not, I do not know what sorrow is. I do not know what hardship is. When they heap blame and reproach, I do not know what pain is. That is his choice. Doing pūjā is your choice. To each his own choice; why should one be pained over it? My feeling is this: if one abuses loudly, it goes into the air. If one abuses within oneself, it strikes oneself. It does not come as far as Me; why should I be pained? Only when you recognise this true principle will there be no worry. "Swami! I am in great pain," they cry; I say, "Very happy." For everything it is happiness. Swami, my husband has died. Very happy. This happiness is the same for everything. Sometimes I think: they are in great sorrow, they are suffering; how does that sorrow feel? It does not even come near. Otherwise, what upheavals would keep going on within a worry befitting Swami, a worry belonging to Swami! Many people are in many kinds of feeling. On one side those who worship, on the other side those who revile. This is a mountain; that is a mountain. But both these mountains have pits. If you want a mound of earth in one place, there must be a pit beneath, must there not? The earth of this pit is the earth of the mound. The earth of the mound is the earth of the pit. Both are equal. This kind of principle is the true principle of the Ātma. But sometimes, on account of what the children do, I act as though a little angry. It is only outside; it does not come from within. With some I do not speak for months on end. This is the medicine that suits their illness.
