In plain words
Man's adornment is humanness. What must stand foremost in human society is humanness. However many kinds of learning you master, however much money you gather, however high the offices you hold, along with all that you must develop humanness. The more we develop humanness, the more society, the state and the nation develop too. A society that has lost its very humanness loses its honour as well. A nation that rests on society loses its own honour too. So the honour of the human race rests on a humanness joined with morality and national feeling.
What students must nurture today is humanness. This humanness can develop only in a spiritual atmosphere. In any other atmosphere there is no chance for this humanness to develop. Only when a seed is set in the soil and watered does it sprout, grow into a tree and give fruit. Put the seed in a tin instead and pour water on it, and it rots. So morality and integrity have a chance to develop only in a heart of humanness. What we must develop in human society is humanness. Good qualities are the support of such humanness; its root is morality. Morality means conduct brought to perfection. Enjoyment and fortune, wealth and plenty: they rest on morality alone. Morality is the kind of thing that carries man to a high level. Morality is precisely what goes with good conduct. It is about this very kind of conduct that humanness has been teaching from time without beginning. The land that, from ancient times, taught morality and integrity to every nation, along with its spiritual wealth, is Bhārata. Morality and integrity are God's true dwellings, His eternal dwellings. So where there is no morality, the human race itself is lost. What the country needs today is this morality. We must keep to this morality at all times and everywhere, as the most urgent need. A man called Marshal Hope taught that in time of war, in time of danger to life, in any hard situation whatever, one must never abandon morality. When Queen Victoria ruled, her prime minister, a man called William Gladstone, kept morality and integrity as his aim and fostered them at all times.
