Passage 10

In plain words

When wealth grows, pride grows; when pride grows, bad qualities grow without end; when wealth falls away, pride falls away; when pride falls away, bad qualities cease, Vēmā.

So he said. Above all, for us, offices, wealth, honour and prestige are passing clouds. This very Ahaṅkāra is bringing about man's downfall. On what grounds are you making use of this Ahaṅkāra? There is no basis at all; this is sheer folly. So, because of Ahaṅkāra, man is forgetting his own self. Forgetting oneself is itself the great bondage. Recognising oneself is the true realisation. Though we do japa, dhyāna, yoga and karma in many ways, our cast of mind has not changed at all.

Students! There is no gain in the person merely changing. The mind must change. Merely changing clothes brings no result at all. Character must change. Without character changing, however much we may swagger that we have enjoyed every kind of path of progress, it is only madness, not the sacred path. Only when you, the leaders of the future, are in the right state will the country enjoy the right state. All the good and ill of the country rests on the students. When students are good people, people of morality and integrity, we can show the country too to be a good and exemplary country. Bhārata has earned such good fame from time without beginning. So restore that ancient culture once more. Because of this sacred culture all countries too received many kinds of joy. But today the Bhāratīyas themselves cannot recognise this Dharma, the special greatness of this culture. So Bhārata took the lead of all countries. It gave a sacred, divine message. It is Bhārata that declared and spread the Vedas, Śāstras, Itihāsas and Purāṇas in a form that was itself the ideal, in a spirit of harmony between one and another. But today, because propagation and teaching in the form of practice have dwindled, no one is able to recognise our culture of Bhārata.
