Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What great meaning there is in these names! Prema itself is man's chief principle. Without Prema, what use is it to be born a man?

In this modern age, as education grows, bad qualities too are growing. “Why study every branch of learning, only to die? One must learn the learning that knows no death.” Studies are not of first importance to us. Good qualities alone matter most. “Tyaja durjana saṃsargaṃ.” By making friends with bad people, we too become bad. In the Mahābhārata, Karṇa was a very great man; he had mastered every kind of learning; in archery he had skill surpassing Arjuna's. But through his dealings with Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana and the like, his name was ruined. “Though one has strength of arm and great strength of intellect, without the strength of God one becomes a slave. What became of one as great as Karṇa in the end?” So keep far away from bad company.

You need not be great; be good

Boy students! Girl students! Recognise that character matters more than wealth.

When wealth increases, pride increases; when pride increases, bad qualities grow without end; when wealth wanes, pride wanes; when pride wanes, bad qualities cease, O Vēmā!

There is no greatness in earning wealth. Earning good qualities is most needful. Speak in measure. If you talk beyond measure, all kinds of needless words keep coming out. What use is it to fill your heart with poison and speak sweet words? First of all, you must fill your heart with sweetness. You must be full of compassion; you must have hearts of Prema. Only then will you be known as true human beings. Jesus, his heart full of Prema, went on caring for many poor and needy people, staying by them as their companion and shelter. Anyone at all must help the good. However many hardships befall us, it does not matter. One must not revile anyone.
