Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Who is the cause of unrest? We ourselves are the cause. Because we lack trikaraṇa śuddhi, the three in our house are not truly one, and that alone is the root cause of this unrest. So unity is most urgent. Ānanda lies in unity alone. It is in this Ānanda that Śānti comes to us.

Without unity we can never reach Ānanda. Without this Ānanda, Śānti is not within our reach. So if we want to gain Śānti, if we want to enjoy well-being, we must develop trikaraṇa śuddhi. Not only trikaraṇa śuddhi. We must regard the three instruments as one. This has become scarce in the world today. In the home, in the country, peace is nowhere to be found. When there is no Śānti in the individual himself, how can there be peace in the world? Only when the individual becomes good does society become good. Only when society becomes good does the country become good. So the individual must change first. Only when man changes does the country change. Man means Manas itself. Manas means nothing but a gathering of thoughts. Our actions in daily life are the very fruit of thoughts. Joy and sorrow are the very effect of these actions. Who is the cause of these joys and sorrows? Our actions themselves are the cause. Our conduct not being right is the very cause of our sorrows. What is the cause of this conduct? Our own intention is the cause. The gathering of these intentions is itself Manas. Without Manas there is no man. So we must shape the Manas in the right way. In Vedānta, 'For men, Manas alone is the cause of bondage and Mokṣa': Manas itself is the root cause of this bondage and Mokṣa. When there is a knife in the hand, you can do good. You can do harm. In the same way, this weapon called Manas is in us. When we set that weapon on the right path, we become people who have done what is sacred. Manas itself is the root cause of merit and sin.

Sin is not something apart, in some foreign land; it clings to the deeds one does.

So divinity and unholiness alike are contained in man's own conduct. Embodiments of Prema! Recognise the divinity of man, stay in unity, and drive away this narrow feeling.
