In plain words
Out of some weakness people pick on others as mere instruments, saying, ‘Through them this sorrow came to me, through them this grief came to me’; but none of those others is its cause. For one's sorrows and joys, for one's losses and gains, for honour and dishonour, for fame and esteem, our own resolves are the root cause. The karmas we have done are themselves its root cause.
Sin is not in some foreign land apart; it clings to the deeds one does. God is not in some other land apart; he too clings to the deeds one does.
On the basis of our karmas alone we go on reaching heaven or hell or Mokṣa or some other place. The udāna breath goes on bringing this. They divided the prāṇas into five. Prāṇa, apāna, vyāna, udāna, samāna: these are not only in our body; they are plain to see in the five elements of the world outside. In the sun, prāṇa. From the earth, apāna. From ākāśa, samāna; from the air, udāna; from fire, vyāna. In these five elements, one prāṇa each is held within. Very near each prāṇa are also the reflections of the good and bad that man has done. No one can tell the secret of creation so easily. Now, beside this object its shadow follows it. In the same way, the good and bad we do follow prāṇa as its shadow. Wherever prāṇa goes, its shadow keeps coming there. All the good and bad we do while we are in this body in this birth give their fitting fruit, and when this prāṇa goes to another body, all of it goes on following it. Where does this prāṇa go? It goes and joins only the body that will give the fruit fitting to whatever good and bad you have practised in this body; it does not go and join any other body. That is why only when we do good works, cherish good thoughts and live with good feeling do we reach a good place. If we sow lemon seeds, only lemons will come. If we sow a mango seed, only mangoes will be had. If we plant a lemon seed and hope for mangoes, will we get mangoes? But man thinks about it in many ways:
