Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But each must carry out his own duty. To carry out the Central trust's saṅkalpa, we decided to give him this honour.

Karma, Dharma. Divine yogas:

Many such people who live by karma, many such karma-yogis, must arise in Bhārata. Every person must become a karma-yogi. That karma itself takes shape as Dharma. That Dharma itself makes birth worthwhile. So, keeping the feeling of God in the heart, we must believe that to immerse ourselves in karma-yoga and make the divine life blessed is every person's duty. The people of Bhārata must never forget the sacredness of Bhārata. Bhārata is never a poor country. Because this truth is not recognised, turmoil of many kinds is growing in the country. Only because the inquiry into what is eternal and what is transient has come to nothing, people follow a kind of wrong path in life, merely for passing pleasures. For petty, trifling pleasures we are losing a great and endless divine glory.

Do not turn Bhārata into a backward country.

At the time independence was won, only 13% were backward class. Growing and growing, it has now become 80% backward class. In another five or six years it may become 100% backward class. This is not a proper word. Bhārata is not a backward class. Only because, rooted in Ajñāna, we foster such a name, foreigners think of Bhārata as a poor country. Bhārata is a rich country. The good fortune the people of Bhārata have, foreigners do not have. Even with such wealth, why should it be known as a poor country?

Free education and medical care must be given:

Not only this. In matters of education and medicine, too, we must develop a fitting sacrifice. You all know. Only a month ago, so many students lost their lives. What is the reason? For all this, they put them through such a plight for the sake of giving them some sort of grade. We must develop a way of giving education freely. We must pursue education for the sake of education. Then these problems will not grow among the students.
