The President, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, the Governor, all of them are here. In this matter of education, without fees, without these distinctions, without our making new castes, saying one is of a forward caste and another of a backward caste: free education for all. When we take up the way of giving free education to the poor and the rich alike, the country will prosper greatly. So many crores we spend. If in this way we make this worthwhile for the future of the children, the country will prosper greatly. Every spiritual organisation, too, must give free education in this matter. You all know: in Tirupati all the money that is needed piles up. Why should they not give free education there? So many crores are going to waste. Only because they cannot give this free education, not even one of the students who live in Tirupati looks upon the face of the temple even on one day in the year. How will Bhakti grow? In the name of God, we must give free education and free medical care freely to all.
A great hospital in Puttaparthi: opening in November 1991:
To give such medical care, yesterday we set about building a great hospital. Many people prayed that it be built in the cities. In the cities there are many people's hospitals, run as a business. Whatever hospitals they build, whatever schools they build, it is business, business. But no one is to be seen who looks at the poor and shows them compassion free of cost. So, resolving that this sacred power must be developed in the villages themselves, we set out to establish a hospital in our Praśānti Nilayam at a cost of a hundred crores. When heart disease strikes, people spend several lakhs and go to America. What is to become of the poor? Who is there to look after them? If they go to the city, no one there will splash so much as coloured water on their faces. Only because we recognised such plight did we resolve to build a great hospital here. Bypass surgery, changing a kidney, operating on the lungs, operating on the brain: all of it free of charge. The opening, too, we have already fixed. On 22nd November '91 we shall open it.
